Cologne was first called Oppidum Obiorum by the Romans,and later CCAA, or Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. In medieval times, it was referred to in Latin as Colonia Agrippina and in German Coellen and in the Cologne dialect Kölle. In terms of its population, Cologne is the third largest German city, situated in the densely populated North Rhine-Westfalia
The city's history dates back 2000 years and it is renowned for its cultural and architectual heritage. The city's favorable position at the Rhine, the intersection of important West-East trade routes, and its function as a residence for secular and cleric powers contributed to Cologne's outstanding significance. The city became a major center for trade. Even today it is a center for trade and traffic, including the highest rate of train traffic and the largest cargo train station in Germany, Köln Eifeltor.

The ports at the Rhine are among the most important in Europe. Cologne is internationally renowned as an economic and cultural center and it is leading in art trade. Furthermore, the city of the carnival is the seat of various associations, media companies, including numerous TV-stations, record labels, and publishing houses. With 44,000 enrolled students, the University of Cologne is one of the largest universities and the College of Cologne (16,500 students) is the largest college in Germany.
